Project Wattle

24 May 2020

Project Wattle, a community pantry, was developed by a local school student who wanted to assist those who might be finding it difficult during the Covid19 crisis. His first pantry has been set up at the Deakin IGA and he hopes the concept will quickly catch on.

The pantry encourages local people to ‘take what you need and donate what you don’t.’ Pantry items are non-perishable and include cleaning and toiletry products. They are donated by community minded people and used by those who need them.

Deakin IGA is a strong supporter of the initiative. Terry Karkazis, IGA owner/manager said, ‘Deakin IGA is very impressed by this young person’s compassion and initiative, as it helps vulnerable members of our community who may need a little support during these difficult times.’

The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, established the Project Wattle website to encourage others to donate items to the pantry, or even to start a pantry at their local shops. The website contains instructions on how to set up a community pantry and includes helpful advertising and donation guides. It also has a map to show pantry locations in the Canberra region.

Project Wattle also encourages community members to reach out to neighbours who may need support during these unprecedented times.
