Embassies

Canberra hosts diplomatic missions from around the world, all with an official representative of that country in residence.  Yarralumla is s a popular tourist destination as it is home to nearly half of these missions.  The remainder are in West Deakin, O'Malley and Red Hill.

Open days and festivals

Many of the diplomatic missions hold open days at various times of the year. Many of these celebrate one of their national festivals and are also food festivals. Needless to say these are very popular and parking is always at a premium so walking or riding your bike is a much better option.

We usually list these events in the YRA calendar and alert members of the dates in the e-newsletter that are sent regularly to members.

Windows to the World

This event in October 2019 provided a rare opportunity to see behind the gates of the Canberra's embassies and high-commissions. It provided a great view into the world of international diplomacy and an opportunity to see, taste and experience cultures from across the globe while enjoying the beautiful gardens and architecture that the embassies and high-commissions have to offer. In 2019, 42 diplomatic missions participated and of those 27 foreign missions held open days at their embassy or high commission residence.

Highlights included Crazy Finnish Games, a Filipino barbecue cook up, traditional Timorese food sampling, the chance to sample 27 different styles of Saudi Arabian dates, and to try your hand at lacrosse and hockey (Canada).
